WHERE DID THE NAME “NEON CULPA” COME FROM?
The band name NEON CULPA came out of a January 2007 Vanity Fair article titled Neo Culpa, which is Latin for “new fault or “new responsibility”, about taking on accountability for the hubris of the Bush Era America in international behaviors (that is putting it mildly). Charlie altered this to “neon culpa”, to mean a new and hopefully bright and colorful way to take on our obligations to our brothers and sisters on this planet. Before December ’06, the band name was Blacklist 40, which came partly from then-bassist Chris relationship with persons politically blacklisted in Korea. Nobody knows what the 40 was supposed to mean. For a very short time in the beginning the band name was The Antibiotics, with the band banner designed by Diana, which had chemistry flasks and bubbling chemicals and was very cool.
WHAT IS NEON CULPA ALL ABOUT?
Oh, everyone says it is the music. Ummm, well, it’s the music!!! Charlie wanted to create some music which could be sung, which sounded recognizably unique as somebands and musicians can be, and employed some musicality that learned through our childhood years and early exposures to all kinds of music, band class, & studying alone. But, really, this is what he loves doing: songwriting, figuring out arrangements, trying different eerie effects, recording, playing and singing. Some people are really good surveyors, mathematicians, welders, astronomers, teachers, eco-activists, programmers, and mechanics. He just want to be good at this one thing, and bring this and share it with our friends, and hopefully make some new friends with it.
